The annual Westside Village Civic Assn. festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7

Sun photo of the 2004 version of the annual festival sponsored by Westside Village homeowners.

The Westside Village Civic Assn. will hold its annual festival from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, on the grounds of St. John's Church, 11000 National Blvd. at Military.

"There will be lots of fun activities for kids and adults," WVCA spokesperson Roberta Schiller wrote in an e-mail. "A petting zoo, food, pony rides, karaoke, face painting, moonbounce — and more."

It is free to members of the association, which is the homeowners group for our area. The fee for others is $10 per family. More information about the Westside Village Civic Assn. is available at http://www.westsidevillage.org/index.html.
WHO CAN SELBY AVE. RESIDENTS COUNT ON TO PROTECT THEIR INTERESTS?
Closing of Overland Ave. Blockbuster brings uncertainty to the area

Blockbuster is closing its Overland Ave. store on the southwest corner of National Place, and two Selby Ave. residents wanted to know where they could go to make sure no replacement is put there that would ruin the neighborhood.

So Caroline Alley and Barbara Tell made a visit to a Palms Neighborhood Council meeting on Sept. 13 to seek assistance.

They were told that both Blockbuster and the 3200 block of Selby are in the territory of the Mar Vista Community Council, and one of them asked, Who has more power? The Palms Council or the Mar Vista Council?

That was a question that nobody ventured to answer, but the two visitors were assured by President Pauline Stout that she and other Palms leaders will keep an eye on the situation. Alley and Tell were invited to bring their concerns to the Planning and Land Use Committee of the Palms Council when it meets Sept. 27 in the IMAN Center.

MAR VISTA IS STILL COPYRIGHTING YOUR PUBLIC RECORDS

Longtime followers of local community affairs may recall the fractious but oddly amusing meeting of the directors of the Mar Vista Community Council in February 2004 when the directors defeated a motion that would have allowed the Web site of that council to be copyrighted.

But Mar Vista Director Bill Scheding, the webmaster, simply ignored the board's overwhelming decision and kept on sticking a "copyright" label on the Web site. The Sun found one recently that looked like this:

What makes this tale perversely amusing is that the vote against putting a copyright on the Mar Vista Web site came only after a noisy exchange at a Mar Vista Board meeting on Feb. 10, 2004, between Scheding (who wanted the copyright notice) and board member Amanda Seward (who opposed it), which ended with Seward stating flatly that "I'm a copyright lawyer!" and Scheding responding in amazement, "You're a copyright lawyer?" Seward: "Yes."

After which the vote was taken and copyright lost, 11-2, with Westside Village homeowners leader Ken Alpern joining Scheding on the losing side.
