Mapping the reaction of a city commissioner
By George Garrigues

I was pacing an upper level of the Westside Pavilion shopping center on May 2 when "The Rev. Dr." Lewis Logan, as he is known, strode by.

(That's his photo to the left.)

I had just finished speaking in front of the city's Board of Neighborhood Commissioners. It is the only city agency that regularly moves around from place to place to listen to the opinion of residents everywhere. And the only one that meets at night.

I had been talking about the Palms Neighborhood Council, and one of my exhibits was the map you can see below.

Logan, who is the pastor of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, was leaving during an intermission break. It's a long drive to 79th and Western, which is where he lives and works.

May 2 was the day after the California Department of Finance had quietly announced that the city's population had just passed the four-million mark.

There we were, two of more than four million Angelinos, chatting on the upper level of the Westside Pavilion.

I asked him what he thought of the map I had presented to the commissioners.

He laughed, and said: "I've been facing that all my life; I'm used to it."

He is a tall, good-looking guy, muscular — purposeful, yet youthful in his demeanor, much younger than me, of course.

"So you understand what the situation is?"

"Sure."

"Yet you're laughing."

He smiled, but his eyes were serious.

"If I didn't keep laughing, I'd get pissed off about it. Like I said, I've been facing it all my life."

"Well, then, I'll be the one that gets pissed off for you," I said.

He smiled again, we shook hands, and he strode away.
