Landmarks of Palms and Westside Village

Take this guided tour of the landmarks of our area.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps have told for decades the story of U.S. cities as reflected in their changing land use.

Sanborn maps of 1919, 1924, 1929 and 1951 help us understand:

• The Venice Crossroads Mall (Albertsons, Office Max, etc.)
• Bagley Avenue, downtown Culver City and the "Culver City" train station.
• The old Palms Depot, now at Heritage Square in the Arroyo Seco.
• Culver Junction and the Ivy Substation.

Sanborn Maps are via the Los Angeles Public Library.

Here are some other interesting maps:

• 1933-39: Very few apartment buildings and almost nothing built in Westside Village.
• 1948: Palms Chamber of Commerce claims Rancho Park, Cheviot Hills and South Robertson.
