REMOVING GRAFFITI
HOW WALTER RENZI AND JEANNE PARKER DO IT.
|
Walter Renzi and Jeanne Parker of Westside Village do more than just complain about graffiti. They are known throughout the neighborhood for actually going out to remove the ugly stuff. Here are their secrets:
1) Work from 6 to 8 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Little traffic. Easier parking.
2) Use chemical-saturated towels (be sure to wear gloves) on stop
signs, gray utility poles, other shiny surfaces (for example, parking signs).
3) Use gray spray paint on backs of slop signs if towels don't do it.
4) Use flat black spray paint on brown telephone poles, using blending sprays (circular) movements. Blends in better than brown.
5) Spray red curbs straight across. Reds will blend in. Flat gray on plain cement.
6) Use flat white on white surfaces only. Looks obvious on other colors.
7) Remove even the smallest graffito. If not, it leads to more the next time you see it.
8) Blue mail boxes clean nicely with the towels. If the paint is very thick, place the towel on the paint for a few minutes to loosen it. Then remove all residue. The box will look like new.
Use blue paint only when necessary (which is not very often). The blue paint doesn't blend in so well and sometimes the box looks worse. USE TOWELS, THEY WORK. Flat black on black newsracks.
9) Utility boxes usually gray remove posters, stickers with spray water bottles. Let soak. Remove as well as you can. Call Pacific Graffiti Solutions (310) 204-2749, which will spray-paint the box like new. They will not paint over posters, etc.
10) REMOVE ALL SIGNS ON POLES, TREES, MAIL BOXES, UTILITY BOXES. Posting them is illegal (L.A. Municipal Code 28.04 (A)). Yes, this includes those "Yard Sale" signs. All illegal.
11) When graffiti is gang-related, call LAPD Gang Enforcement Unit at (310) 840-2159.
12) Graffiti is illegal, (L.A. Municipal Code 91.8104.15.) Business should be told of this code and they should remove the graffiti.
THIS IS AN UNENDING JOB;
DON'T GIVE UP. WE HAVEN'T.
