Up Close, Globe A1’s Advertising Sign Is a Work of Art
(You used to be able to see it from Venice Blvd., but now it is hard to spot.)
This is the place where the Globe A-1 mosaic sign is situated: You go to 8985 Venice Boulevard (Albertson's, Office Max, Starbucks, etc.), and walk up the outside stairway near the shoe shop to the second level. You could also drive to the second level (where the sign is), but the driveway, just west of Robertson, is hard to find. Click here for a map..

This is a former bakery building. Sanborn's fire-insurance maps in 1924, 1929 and 1951 label the property as Globe Mills Macaroni Factory, but it appears from the map that the particular building with the mural had not been built until after 1929. The 1951 Sanborn's map appears to show the building as an addition to an older one. It's probable the mural was made around that time or maybe before, when the building was constructed.
Was This The Man Who Ordered the Mosaic Constructed?

(Daily Variety, posted Dec. 30, 2000)

Robert William, former motion picture publicist and inventor of the film industry's first helicopter-mounted camera system, died Dec. 7 from complications of leukemia and pneumonia at his home in the Hancock Park section of L.A.. He was 86.

As a publicist for Warner Bros. in New York and later Hollywood, William worked with actors including Errol Flynn, Ronald Reagan, Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart.

Born in New York City, William graduated from Colby College in Maine. Following his work as a publicist, he served as an instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

After the war, William developed a motion picture camera mount for helicopter use and founded his own helicopter photography company.

In 1949, William purchased the Globe A1 Macaroni Co. and served as its president until selling it to Borden Foods in the early 1980s.

He is survived by his five children and six grandchildren.
