HOW CAN THE POST OFFICE LOSE AN ENTIRE STREET?
Mail sent to Irene Street is returned —twice
Congresswoman Jane Harman's deputy is on the case

The Palms Neighborhood Council has an e-mail list of more than 800 names and a much smaller postal list of folks who don't have e-mail.

Twice within the last two months the Postal Service has returned Neighborhood Council letters addressed to apartments on Irene Street, with the notation

RETURN TO SENDER / NO SUCH STREET / UNABLE TO FORWARD.

But Irene Street is not hard to find; it's clearly marked, just south of the railroad overpass off Motor Ave.

Look in the box below for proof.

Hello? Post office!

Irene Street is just where it always has been — south of Cheviot Hills between Motor Ave. and National Blvd.

Not only that, but the P.O. also returned a letter clearly addressed to

Pacific Graffiti Solutions
3347 Motor Ave., Suite 100
Palms CA 90034

This time the little yellow sticker said:

RETURN TO SENDER / ATTEMPTED - NOT KNOWN / UNABLE TO FORWARD

Yvette Neal at our local graffiti-removal HQ has assured The Sun that her office hasn't budged an inch.

All that reminds is a reminder of a letter The Sun received last May complaining about uncollected mail in the same general area — on National Blvd between Motor and Overland.

Pity Reza Akef, who is a field deputy for Congresswoman Jane Harman. He was at the Nov. 1 meeting of the Palms Neighborhood Council. He was asked to take up the matter with post office officials; he smiled gamely and said he would.

Akef has already promised to work with the post office in improving relations with the communities of both Palms and Mar Vista. He said he'd keep at it. Let's hope so.

By the way, that shaggy bush — or whatever it is — on the Motor Ave. sidewalk just outside the post office is hindering the view of the street again as you exit the parking garage: It should be cut back — or removed.

And complete blithering idiots are still parking their cars in front of the P.O., thereby preventing access to the drive-up mailboxes.
