TOUR OF PALMS
BY L.A. CONSERVANCY OFFICIAL
Preservation advocate is impressed with our community's architectural gems
Jay Platt poses in front of the Globe A-1 mosaic on Venice Blvd. west of Exposition Blvd. on June 15, 2006.

The staffer of the Los Angeles Conservancy preservation group was accompanied in a tour of our historic sites by editor George Garrigues of The Palms-Village Sun and Jonathan Weiss, a local historian active in the Cheviot Hills Homeowners Assn.

This group of houses at Palms and Clarington impressed with their unusual nature (above and below).
Architectural details caught the eye of the Conservancy's preservation advocate

Platt was favorably impressed by this modern structure on Venice Blvd., the Brotman Physicians Building. It doesn't have to be ancient to have architectural signficance: there is an active Modern Committee working within the L.A. Conservancy

He looked at the former King's Daughters home for the aged on Regent Street, which has been a Montessori School since at least 1976

Jonathan Weiss discovered this Web site for the modern King's Daughters. It is still a religious, philanthropic and educational organization.

THESE TWO 1924 BUILDINGS BELOW ARE AN EXAMPLE OF AN EARLY MULTI-USE STRUCTURE, WITH APARTMENTS ABOVE THE SHOPS ON THE CORNER STILL BEING OCCUPIED

It's possible the two buildings at National and Motor, constructed in 1924, could be landmarked for their historic nature, Platt said.

The low-lying structure on National west of Motor was an early site for Fire Station 43; the photo (from the Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Archive) was made in 1938. Compare with the photo just above. —>
The Palms Neighborhood Council will be asked to fund a project to landmark these and other historic buildings in our neighborhood
