Palms Council and Watch will continue meeting in the IMAN Center

The Palms Neighborhood Council has effectively brushed aside the suggestion of an anonymous e-mailer who sought to move the Council's meeting place away from the IMAN Center on Motor Ave. because he was "not comfortable meeting at an Islamic center."

The e-mail was sent on July 13 to Council President Todd W. Robinson, who said he would not bother to respond to it. It is posted on The Sun's Letters Page, here.

After a short debate on July 19 that included Stakeholders and members of the Council's Representative Assembly, the Assembly (which is the governing body of the Council) simply ignored the suggestion to move.

Instead, it chose the first Wednesday of the month as the new date for regular meetings of the Council and the Assembly in the IMAN Center.

Longtime members of the Palms-Westside Village Neighborhood Watch agreed at the same time to change the days of the Watch meeting as well. Starting Aug. 3, the Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.

The Neighborhood Council meeting will be called for 7 p.m. on the same Wednesday evening but may be delayed until 7:15 if needed.

The new date, which breaks a long-standing Watch tradition of coming together on the third Tuesday, will avoid a scheduling conflict with the Palms Middle School Friends of Palms-PTSA meeting, which meets that night during the school year.

Palms's first 'President' is lauded in resolution;
new leader names committees
After some three years of work, Len Nguyen has resigned from the leadership position of the Palms Neighborhood Council to become a field deputy for City Council Member Bill Rosendahl. He is shown above in September 2003, with Westside Village resident Jeanne Parker, at an appearance by Police Chief Bill Bratton (foreground, back to camera) in the IMAN Center in Palms. City Council Member Cindy Miscikowski is at bottom right.

Nguyen was lauded in a resolution drafted by Assembly Member Alejandro Soschin and approved unanimously on July 13 by the new Representative Assembly of the Neighborhood Council (text below).
Resolution commending Len Nguyen and thanking him for his efforts on behalf of Palms, California, U.S.A.

Len Nguyen is someone who cares very much about this neighborhood. Palms is his home, and as someone who takes pride in his place of residence, Len has committed himself to the tasks required to make that home the very best it can be.

For more than two years, Len has demonstrated a determination to improve this community, not only for himself, but for all his fellow stakeholders. He is a quiet man, but behind that calm demeanor is a sense of purpose that has allowed him to harness the efforts of many others as this organization took shape.

It was not an easy process, but it was greatly facilitated by Len's ability to forge a consensus, establish the right priorities, and marshal the broad support that made Palms's certification and the creation of the Palms Neighborhood Council a reality.

It is with great pride that all of us can say we served with Len, and we are certain that although he is moving on to other challenges, he will always remain a part of our Council.

Perhaps Len's new responsibiities will take him out of Palms, but Palms will always be a part of Len. For this we are thankful, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Adopted by the Representative Assembly of the Palms Neighborhood Council this thirteenth day of July, two thousand five, in the community of Palms, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.
