DEVELOPER PLANS HIGH-END CONDO UNITS
AT I-10 ENTRANCE TO PALMS
Aaron Swerdlow is planning to build a 'live-work' condominium project on the southeast corner of National Blvd. and Overland Ave., where an Arco service station used to be. The 21 loft-style units will sell "in the $500,000 range," he says.

The parcel is now zoned for C-2 commercial with a 45-foot height limit and would need a zone change with a 50-foot height limit
Swerdlow told the Palms-Westside Village Neighborhood Watch on Jan. 18 that the development should result in much less traffic than that generated by the old Arco station. All traffic would enter and leave the property on the National Blvd. side.

Whether exiting traffic would be limited to right-turn-only is up to the city, he said.

The developer said that Arco will be responsible for cleaning up the site, which has been a gas station for more than 50 years.

Steve Collins of RSA Architects is in charge of designing the project; he can be reached at 213-225-7254.

Indo Cafe customers console owner as she absorbs news of tsunami losses in Indonesia

(From the Los Angeles Times)

By midafternoon Monday (Dec. 27), Farida Tio had made dozens of phone calls to her home island of Sumatra, whose coastal communities were Indonesia's hardest-hit areas. She got through just once, to a brother-in-law in unaffected Jakarta. He told Tio that her brothers and sisters were probably in Jakarta and most likely were fine. But he was sobbing, Tio said.

His mother's house was in Banda Aceh, at the devastated northern tip of the island. The house, he learned, had been swept away. He assumed that his mother was dead but didn't know.

"He cried and cried," the 44-year old Tio said. "He loves his mother so much, and he still doesn't know. I cried and cried too."

Tio's sole consolation came from patrons at her West Los Angeles restaurant, Indo Cafe [on National Blvd. west of Motor Ave.]

"They ask me what part of Indonesia I'm from, is my family OK, am I OK," Tio said. "I say all the communication is just cut off. I appreciate them asking very much, very much."

SAN DIEGO FREEWAY WIDENING PROJECT HAS TAKEN SEVEN HOMES ON THIS QUIET STREET
The western side of this block-long quiet residential street of Tuller, a block west of Sepulveda, has been transformed into a storage place for big steel pilings, which will be used in the widening of the I-405 San Diego Freeway.
The freeway will be widened by 30 feet to accommodate carpool lanes. Seven houses on the west side of the street, against the freeway, have been purchased by CalTrans and removed. When the work is completed, the vacant parcels will be resized to accommodate three R-1 lots and put back on the market.

The residents who were not bought out are keeping a wary eye on the project, hoping that it won't make too much of a dent in their property values.

The job will eventually involve a new Palms Blvd. bridge over the 405 between western Palms and eastern Mar Vista.

WELLS FARGO BANK OPENS ANOTHER OFFICE IN PALMS
Culver City branch is now in business
at Washington and Duquesne

Palms now has two Wells-Fargo branches: The latest to open is the Culver City office at 10011 Washington Blvd. (at Duquesne), directly across the street from the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Yes, even though it has a Culver City address it is definitely in Palms. Click here for a map.

The property was a Trader Joe's just a year ago.

The branch features a large mural with historical scenes of Culver City. There is a key to the mural posted near the door.

The other Wells Fargo branch is at 11116 Palms Blvd., just east of Sepulveda. That is the Palms branch, which features a mural bearing scenes from Palms history, including the old Palms library, the railroad depot and the Palms movie theater on Motor Ave. That mural doesn't have a key, though. Here is a map.

Bank of America has a branch in the Albertsons market in the Venice Crossroads Mall on Venice Blvd. at Durango. No murals there. Here's the map.

ALL IN A DAY AND NIGHT'S WORK

Our firemen from Station 43 were on the job to extinguish this car fire one afternoon in January 2005 on Westwood Blvd. just north of Venice (across from Cafe Brasil).

The next night another crew from Station 43 rescued some burning food from a kitchen stove on Keystone south of Tabor.

FLOOD CONTROL HAS SURE IMPROVED IN THE PAST 64 YEARS

The low-lying areas of Palms were flooded in 1941 (top photo), but heavy rains have someplace to go in 2005 — a network of storm drains that drains the raging torrent to Ballona Creek and the Pacific Ocean. Result: no floods on Venice Blvd. (bottom photo).

What is now The Surplus Store at Motor Ave. was the Palms post office in 1941. It had previously been a bank. The smaller storefronts included a sweet shop with a soda fountain and a payment office for the DWP.

ANOTHER REASON WHY WE LOVE PALMS

You see such interesting people on the street — in this case where Overland crosses Venice.
