Challenges Facing Palms, California, U.S.A.
Everybody has a different view of the problems and challenges facing our neighborhood. On this page you will find some of them. What challenges do you think are ahead for Palms? Drop us a line.

Some of the challenges are:

HISTORICAL PRESERVATION AND COMMEMORATION

The old railroad station has been moved far away, but there are still two historical buildings in Palms that have been marked by the city:

182. IVY SUBSTATION, 9015 Venice Boulevard.

624. LAWRENCE AND MARTHA JOSEPH RESIDENCE AND APARTMENTS, 3819 - 3827 Dunn Drive.

Other historical structures are worth preserving, too. Like:

HELMS HALL OF FAME, 8760 Venice Boulevard. and the HELMS BAKERY, 8800 Venice Blvd.
(not in Palms, but near it)

MASONIC TEMPLE, 9635 Venice Blvd. (at Watseka), built in 1928, home of Foshay Masonic Lodge.

St Mary's 1
ST MARY’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 3647 Watseka Ave.

Do you have more to tell us about?

Will mixed-used commercial-residential development, a planned light-rail line and the revitalization of Culver City be the salvation for Venice Boulevard?

PARKS AND RECREATION

Can we develop the old Pacific Electric right-of-way along Exposition and National as a public park?

The many apartment dwellers in our community need more open space. We have only vest-pocket-size Media Park (Venice and Culver), Palms Park (Overland and the I-10) and Woodbine Park (Woodbine east of Motor).

And will there ever be a bike path along the flood-control channel in Westside Village?

SIGN POLLUTION

Do we really need all those phone-card signs and banners cluttering shop windows?

The city of Los Angeles has a sign ordinance, but it can't be enforced without the pressure of Neighborhood Councils like ours.

TRAFFIC

Mindless drivers on cell phones zipping past you in a pedestrian zone?

Why doesn't the LAPD run a 'sting' to get some of them before one of them gets us?

And how come Palms has about the only, puzzling three-way stop in town? (Mentone and National)?
