FURNITURE FACTORY FIRE

Aug. 19, 2004, blaze at Sofamasters, 3757 Overland Ave., was the biggest in years for Palms

Thick smoke blanketed southern Palms.
Fire trucks and ambulances were called in from other areas and Culver City.
Firefighters from many part of the city sprang into action.
A brisk wind fanned the flames and covered the area with fumes . . .
. . . and the smoke was too much for some people anyway.
Spectators were out in force. Some worried about their homes and businesses.
Firefighters attacked the flames from Las Flores Court on the south.
Newton Plumbing's slogan, Always Keep Your Wife in Hot Water, seemed a bit too much.
There was a strange beauty in the curvature of the fire hoses.
A woman in a wheelchair was helped over one of the hoses spread across the streets and sidewalks.
Local firemen from Station 43 were the first on the scene.
Smoke obscured the firefighters as they prepared for the battle.
